type='text'>Judgement Day in the South Carolina Primary.

Well fans of politics it is finally here. One of the most important primaries is upon as as it relates to Decision 2008 in American Politics.

Today is a true indicator as to how the Democratic Party's leadership race is going to swing. One way or another this years theme of political change on the national scene will have evolved. Are the electorate swinging over to a woman as a potential president or is the American electorate finally willing to embrace an African American as their next possible Leader in Chief!

Only South Carolinians know the answer to that question.

So far in Decision 2008 we have witnessed a very eratic polling system when it comes to selecting possible caucus winners in the previous Democratic primaries. In Iowa, the first primary, we witnessed the polls showing a 'too close to call' scenario and then Barack Obama won rather easily over Hillary Clinton and John Edwards. In New Hampshire, the polling pundits had it all wrong, exit polls showed a rather decisive win developing for upstart Obama; however, this would soon turn into a 'going away' win for Hillary Clinton.

The polls in New Hampshire had Obama ranked @ 37% of the popular vote and Clinton @ 30% and when all was said and done Hillary had walked away with almost a 10% marginal win. How could the polling pundits have a +/- of 17 points? Usually the margin for error on exit polls is roughly 5%. Were there that many people leaving the polls telling 'little white lies'? No one knows for sure, but political watchers suggested that Hillary's last minute 'cries for help' may have worked in drawing the 50 year old white woman voters to the polls to knock Obama down a notch or two. Either way you look at it, after New hampshire the party has become polarized and there is officially a two horse race going on. Unfortunately the ever likable and well spoken John Edwards has - again - become a political 'also ran' in Decision 2008. Edwards hovering in and around 19% of the popular vote will still have a say in how Decision 2008 ends up. He may not come up the middle and surprise anybody; however, if he decides to step aside and release his voting delegates either Hillary or Obama will have a whole lot of votes to gain or lose. Edwards just may become the Democratic Party's unofficial Rainmaker!

So it comes down to South Carolina. A lovely state known for it's seaside golf getaways, calabash, beautiful people, warm southern hospitality, and African American's who like to vote.
South Carolina has traditionally voted well for the Clinton name. President Clinton won hear twice - as has as homestate favourite John Edwards (2004). Sadly for Edwards, this time around will not see the senator carry the popular vote. The polls as of January 26th show Edwards isolated @ 19% of the popular vote - which leads me to raise - once again - the possibility of a 'polling discrepency', this time in South Carolina!

As I write the polls for the South Carolina Primary show Obama @ 38% and Clinton @ 30%. Unless there is a huge turn around it appears that Obama will walk out of the 'golf coast' with excellent momentum heading into Super Tuesday (February 5th). Next Tuesday another 24 primaries will take place and 52% of all delegates will have pledged their votes. This my friends will be a great indicator as to where the Democratic Party is headed going into the November Presidential Election!

Will Barack Obama, break through in South Carolina - where over 50% of the population are African Americans? And the majority of these skeptical voters are at or below the lower/middle income standard for that state. Will they choose to embrace a black Christian Senator from Illinois? Or are they going to select a white woman Senator from the state of New York who is the wife of the former President of the United States of which the people of South Carolina stood by for 8 years?

Presently Hillary Clinton has 218 delegates from previous primaries and Barack Obama has 127, John Edwards has 53. To have the right to go before the country as the Democratic Party's nomination in Presidential Decision @ 2008 you need 2025 delegates. Today and upcoming Super Tuesday will be an excellent barometer to indicate who the Democrats will choose. My barometer is saying Barack Obama..sounds slightly the same...interesting...we'll see. I say may the best black man or white woman win.

Indeed change is coming America!

Welcome myself to Blogger.com

I must introduce myself as a passionate writer. I have chosen to start blogging here @ Blogger.com and I have chosen to write articles @ bleacherreport.com. I love all sports and I recently wrote an article regarding the Toronto Maple Leafs decision to fire General Manager John Ferguson Jr. and replace him with former GM Cliff Fletcher. This site and bleacherreport will be interactive.

I have always enjoyed writing. My writing days go back to high school, but it was not until I was in the Ontario civil service that I discovered my passion and flare for creative writing. I love to write about world affairs, politics on all levels, current affairs, sports, etc. I have had over 100 letters to the editor published in local papers throughout the greater Toronto area. I was the president of an Ontario Public Service Employees Union for over 5 years. I worked @ a maximum security prison in Scarborough, Ontario for over 15 years. I have truly seen it all! I have worked under an NDP government - (Bob Rae..ouch!) and a Conservative government (Mike Harris..double ouch!) -so I have to admit that I became a political letter writer working under those two regimes.

There is no better feeling then waking up in the morning only to find out that you have had your letter to the editor published as Letter of the Day. I have had two such feelings. In 1995 I was given the Toronto Sun "Christmas Edition' Letter of the Day. It was in regards to our troops participating in an alleged 'peacekeeping mission' in Bosnia. If that were today I would be writing about our troops in Afghanistan and the mess that they are dealing with there! In 1997 I had the Letter of the Day published in the Toronto Star regarding the monster known as Paul Bernardo. Yes the devil as we know him, spent 2 and a half years locked in my prison in Scarborough awaiting his trial for the Mahaffey/French Schoolgirl killings. Oh and by the way I also went to high school with that 'wacko'! We both went to Sir Wilfred Laurier Collegiate in Scarborough.

So yes fellow bloggers, I am here to write, how often who knows? I am presently working for a large retailer here in Ontario. I am the General Manager of a large hockey retail specialty store just north of Toronto, I am having fun and I work with a great team! So I am here to write when I can and you can follow my articles posted on this blog and on bleacherreport.com. Enjoy and I look forward to interacting with you all!

markymark-opinionmaker.blogspot.com
